ADAM LITTEKEN #6 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

AdamLitteken4.JPG

On Tuesday, October 2, 2007, Spartan hockey player, Adam Litteken, collapsed on the ice while warming up for practice.  Adam passed away a short time later at a local hospital.  It was later determined that Adam suffered from a condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.  HCM is a genetic disease that causes the heart to thicken abnormally.

Adam's death was an unfathomable loss for his family and friends, the FHC Spartan Hockey Club and the hockey community in general.  The passion and love for the game that Adam demonstrated was deep and his commitment to his teammates strong.   Because of the lasting impression that Adam left on so many, the FHC Hockey Club wanted to ensure that Adam's memory would remain in our thoughts for many, many years.

On Friday, November 9, 2007, the Spartans took the ice for their first game without Adam.  While that game was more about healing than hockey, it was a necessary step for the players and family.  In pregame ceremonies, the Club officially retired Adam's #6 jersey, forever linking that number to Adam.  No future Spartan will ever wear #6 again.  The Club also unfurled a banner in Adam's name.  The banner will hang indefinitely in the Rec-Plex South arena as a tribute to Adam.

The FHC Spartan Hockey Club established a scholarship fund in Adam's honor at St. Johns Bank & Trust.  The annual scholarship will be awarded to a senior FHC Spartan hockey player who demonstrates many of the wonderful characteristics as a player and person that were so evident in Adam.  The scholarship is determined by a panel of five evaluators, including the Litteken family, and is announced and awarded at the Club's annual end of season banquet.

CONDOLENCES

The outreach of the hockey community stretched across the country.  The support is both touching and uplifting.

*      I just read about the death of Adam Litteken.  As a father of a high school hockey player, I know how devastating this must be for the family, team, and school.  I would like to make a donation to the team fund in Adam’s name.  Can you send me an address or is PO Box 278, St. Peters, MO 63376 good enough?

Ron

Delaware, Ohio

*      I hope you will forward this message to the Francis Howell Central hockey players, coaches, and program, especially the family of Adam Litteken.  This tragedy has touched us all, and the thoughts and prayers of the Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears hockey program, which I coach here in Juneau, AK, are with you all.  I was on the FHC hockey team in its inaugural seasons and still translate my experiences of how much the team still means to me to my players.  Each time I return home to St. Charles to visit I make my way to see a FHC hockey game, and always leave proud of the boys.  During these somber times of Adam’s passing, my dearest condolences.

Luke

Juneau, Alaska

*      Sorry about the news.  It seems that it has affected the younger kids as well.  I know our team had a long talk last night about the incident and a few kids were scared to practice on the same rink.  I know the coach told them not to worry because they have a hockey angel watching over them now.  I thought that was a pretty nice way to look at the situations.

Matt

St. Peters, Missouri

*      Our sincerest condolences go out to the family, teammates, and friends of Adam Litteken.  This is a tragedy to the hockey community as a whole.  You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Brenda

Springfield Youth Hockey Association

*      My condolences to Adam’s entire family, including his hockey family.  I can’t imagine the pain of losing a child or brother, but there is strength in knowing there is support from the entire hockey community.  Adam and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.
